McCall Business License

Sherry Scheline

This week on social media rumor began that in order to be a service provider in the McCall area you needed a McCall business license. It quickly escalated and brides were concerned law enforcement was going to show up and shut their wedding down because their DJ did not have a business license.

McCall is a beautiful city and simply adores visitors.  There were some concerns that outside wedding vendors would be limited in the McCall area; this is simply not the case.

First if you are operating a business inside McCall city limits you need a business license.

General Business License
Any person or entity seeking to engage in, prosecute or carry on any trade, business or profession within the limits of McCall must obtain a General Business License from the City Clerk. If you received a down payment for your services you will need to follow the business license in that particular locale.

The following groups do not need a commercial business license, but they do need a specific permit (inquire at City Hall):  Short-term vendors that operate in McCall for a specific event.  Door-to-door salespersons (peddlers).

This term "vendors" is where the city has had to offer interpretation. After speaking with their legal counsel it was decided this does not mean "wedding and event professionals in the service sense."  This new dialogue was created to help the city with crowing number of street vendors and food trucks, etc... at events.  It was not designed to make djs and makeup artist get business licenses so that the City of McCall can make a buck.

A Commercial Business License from the City of McCall is an established component of McCall City Code. It allows the City to protect the health and safety of its citizens by keeping public authorities (Police, Fire, EMS, etc.) informed of the type of business that is conducted and materials that are stored on-site in the event of an emergency. It also allows a method of communication between the City and the local business community.

Quick break down inside the City Limits of McCall if you are a "service" provider you do not need a business license.  If you sell product you do need a business license.  Makeup artists you do not need one to apply makeup but if you sell Younique, Avon, MaryKay or other products you would need one.

All consumable products cakes, flowers, caterer, etc... do NOT need a business license but the delivery of said product is subject to sales tax. Businesses outside McCall that sell goods to customers inside City Limits do not need a business license. However, they do need to collect and remit local sales tax from the sale.

The following groups do not need a commercial business license, but they do need a specific permit (inquire at City Hall):  Short-term vendors that operate in McCall for a specific event. This term "short term vendors" although sounds like many event professionals is not directly referencing "event professionals" as we think of them.  This was designed for food vendors at particular events and service individuals benefitting primarily off of large community events.

Exceptions are rentals. Rentals are not a consumable product not a permanent structure. A business license is required if the rental is within the city limits.  This includes vintage rentals, tables, chairs and dance floors.

A McCall business license is $125 for the first year and $25 a year there after.  The application process is very easy and can be done online.  You do NOT need a McCall address to get a McCall Business license.  If you have questions or are at a loss call Bessi Jo the city clerk.  208-634-7142
