Just Trust Me
Yesterday, one of my favorite clients came into the shop, watched me as I cut and snipped and slipped stems into an almost-done bouquet, and asked, “How do you do that?” It isn’t the first time I’ve been faced with this question, but I just know, in my gut, I am doing what I need to do. Design, for me, comes from within. It is a gentle and nuanced process that is born from all the little details I gather along the way, from a bride’s grandmother’s vintage rosary or scrap of paper that inspired her invitations, its all the little facets of informations that guide me in my design. I take guidance and details from everything but flowers--table linens to gown style, building a bank of inspiration means knowing what the whole picture will look like.
I ask my clients how they want it to feel, and what they imagine for color and texture and style. But the greatest result always comes when someone says,”Just go for it. Do whatever you want.” This doesn’t happen all the time, but the most sacred of all elements in my process is this kind of trust. And when I know I have it, I can let all the inner ability and creative processes loose. When I know I can fling myself forth into work, and be an artist, and not worry about having the exact variety of this or a certain color to match a swatch—this is when the magic happens. And you can never go wrong with a bit of magic.
